Are You a 10-90 Kind of Manager?
We’re not talking about a 1090 tax form. We’re talking about a management mentality focusing 10% on work and 90% on people. Clearly, this is not an exact science.
It’s all about management balance. While you certainly need a level of technical expertise as a manager, you also need to be able to communicate and interact effectively with your team.
Have you ever hired someone who is (mostly) technical, but lacks interpersonal skills? If so, how did that work out? That type of hire can be a recipe for disaster.
Peter Drucker (he’s like the Godfather of modern management) said the following:
“The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me never say ‘I.’ And that’s not because they have trained themselves not to say ‘I.’ They think ‘we’; they think ‘team.’
They understand their job is to make the team function. They accept responsibility and don’t sidestep it, but ‘we’ gets the credit. This is what creates trust, what enables you to get the task done.”
Takeaway: You can break up the work / people percentages however you’d like, but a stronger focus on your people is always a strong play.
Be a Better Remote Worker
Working remotely calls for a different style of work. There’s a good chance you’re not showing up to your traditional 9-5 in your sweatpants
Attire aside, it’s important to have a different structure to your day if you work remotely.
Here are a few tips on being a better remote worker.
–Do the work: Yes, you can eat your breakfast at 10am or go meet a friend for coffee and still be “working.” While you’re not required to physically show up at an office anymore, you still have to prove to your boss that you’re getting the work done. So, do the work!
-Work / life balance: It’s easy to “always be working” when your computer is only steps away from your kitchen or living room. Make sure to consciously shut down when your work day is over.
–Be social: Don’t become a hermit. If your company offers weekly video calls with the team, hop on them. It’s important to connect with your colleagues.
-Limit distractions: Create a separate workspace in your house or apartment if you can. Pro tip: don’t set up your desk near a TV.
